A scratch on your car can be frustrating, particularly when the rest of the vehicle is in good condition. Whether it’s happened in a car park, while manoeuvring, from a hedge or simply through everyday use, it’s easy to think that a small scratch is ‘just cosmetic’ and can be dealt with later.

However, depending on the depth of the damage, leaving a scratch unrepaired for too long can sometimes lead to further problems.

Not All Car Scratches Are the Same

The appearance of a scratch doesn’t necessarily tell you how serious it is.

Some light scratches may only affect the clear coat or surface of the paintwork and can potentially be removed or significantly reduced through professional machine polishing.

Deeper scratches can go through the clear coat and colour layer and may expose the primer underneath. In more severe cases, the scratch can reach the bare metal or plastic beneath the paint.

This is why it’s difficult to know whether a scratch can simply be polished out without seeing it first.

Why Should You Deal With a Scratch Promptly?

If the underlying paint or metal has been exposed, leaving the damage untreated can allow moisture, dirt and road salt to get into the affected area.

Over time, this can potentially lead to deterioration of the surrounding paintwork and, where bare metal is exposed, corrosion.

Getting the damage assessed sooner rather than later can therefore be worthwhile —particularly if the scratch is deep or has exposed the underlying surface.

Can a Scratch Be Repaired Without Repainting the Whole Panel?

In many cases, yes.

Modern SMART (Small to Medium Area Repair Technology) techniques allow suitable localised damage to be repaired without automatically replacing the panel or carrying out a full conventional body shop repair.

The appropriate repair will depend on factors such as:

  • The depth of the scratch
  • The size and location of the damage
  • The type and colour of the vehicle
  • Whether the underlying material has been exposed
  • The condition of the surrounding paintwork

Every repair is assessed individually.

What About Scratches on Bumpers?

Bumpers are particularly prone to scratches and scuffs, especially from parking, low walls, bollards and other vehicles.

Fortunately, many bumper scratches and scuffs can be repaired cosmetically without replacing the entire bumper.

A professional assessment can determine whether the damage is suitable for a SMART repair and provide you with the most appropriate repair option.

How Can I Get a Quote?

At PRC Cosmetic Car Repairs, we make getting an initial assessment very straightforward.

Simply send us a few photographs of the damage via WhatsApp, fill in or our online enquiry form below – or click here to contact us.

Ideally, include:

  • A close-up photograph of the scratch or scratches
  • A wider photograph showing the whole panel from about 2m away
  • Your vehicle make and model

This will allow us to assess the damage and advise whether a mobile SMART repair may be suitable for you.
